Reducing heat soak and increasing internal volume are the main considerations when designing an intake for turbocharged engines. In the A35, the intake system is in close proximity to the exhaust manifold which rapidly heat soaks the engine bay. High temperatures are detrimental for engine performance as the turbo would have to build boost with heated, less dense air and so the only way to ensure IAT’s are kept to a minimum is for a fully sealed intake. In order to reduce the restriction from a sealed intake we have increased the volume of the airbox by relocating the ECU and also allowing an opening in the airbox on the cold side which is away from the direct heat of the manifold. The carbon inlet tube is larger in internal volume with a starting internal diameter of 111mm (4.4″) smoothly tapering down to match the turbo inlet pipe. Finally we use a custom made high-flow dry filter which is ISO tested for filtration performance and has a larger filtration area than the stock filter.

Dyno Testing

Dyno testing was carried out by MSL Performance who are a Mercedes specialist based in the UK. A fully standard A35 AMG was tested with the stock airbox and then with the Eventuri intake back to back whilst ensuring external conditions were the same. As can be seen below the intake provides a gain in performance throughout the RPM range. The highlighted point shows a significant gain of power where the intake allows a higher flow rate to be maintained in the higher RPM range where the stock airbox starts to become a restriction. The resulting gains are noticeable on the road with better throttle response and improved acceleration times. With a tuned A35 we would expect even better gains as the demand from the turbo increases.

The Eventuri A35 intake system consists of a number of components engineered to perform a specific purpose and fabricated to the highest of standards. The shape of the carbon tube at the turbo end has been optimised using CFD to minimise turbulence. The connection to the turbo is achieved with an innovative silicon coupler that features an internal thermal separator between the carbon tube and the metal turbo housing. The addition of the carbon tube smooths the path from the Venturi filter housing all the way to the stock turbo inlet tube and the difference is significant in terms of the extra performance gained. The rest of the intake remains the same with our cold air scoop and Venturi filter housing providing smooth airflow and low intake temperatures. By integrating an effective cold air feed, which the stock system lacks and coupling that with our Patented Venturi housing and carbon inlet tube, our intake delivers industry leading results – consistently. Simply placing and open cone filter with any number of heat shielding in the same place will result in exactly the same problem - the system will pull in hot air and result in a loss of obtainable power. Our intake system utilises a cold air feed from the panel under the windscreen allowing the filter to be saturated with ambient air regardless of how hot the engine bay becomes. This coupled with our unique Venturi housing for smooth flow results in an immediate gain across the entire RPM range of 24-30hp and a significant torque increase of 28-35ft-lb over the stock airbox. The dyno graph shows the comparison between the Eventuri V2 Intake and the stock airbox using a stock tune and aftermarket intercooler (for all runs). We have invested months of intense R&D in developing an inlet which leaves no room for compromise. VOLUME – FLOW QUALITY – TEMPERATURE are the 3 main design criteria which we sought to meet.

1) VOLUME : Inlet Diameters – Eventuri 78mm : Stock 63mm. By maintaining the MAF section diameter from the intake through to the turbo tube we have increased the cross sectional area by over 53% for the majority of the intake flow path to the turbo. Clearly with significantly larger internal diameter sizes, the Eventuri tube encapsulates a much larger internal volume which de-restricts the flow path to the turbo. This allows the turbo to operate more efficiently and spool up to peak boost levels faster. It also allows the turbo to operate at peak boost with less turbine loading.

2) FLOW QUALITY : Having just a large internal volume is no good unless the flow path also allows for smooth airflow to the turbo. By using high temperature Prepreg Carbon Fiber we have managed to achieve a smooth internal surface. In contrast, the stock inlet tube is made from cast aluminium which ends up with a rough internal surface. This coupled with the smooth curvature of the elbow results in a flow path which minimises turbulence.

3) TEMPERATURE : The final criteria was to minimise the conduction of heat into the airflow. The stock inlet is directly connected to the turbo and so immediately conducts heat as the turbo spools. Our system uses a machined flange which connects to the turbo and then a silicon coupler with an integrated thermal spacer to keep the carbon elbow from having direct contact with the turbo. This barrier coupled with the low through-thickness thermal conductivity of carbon fiber results in less heat being transferred to the airflow.

This turbo tube has been designed to fit our FK2 intake with the carbon MAF tube.

Dyno Testing

Our carbon elbow has been extensively tested on the road and on the dyno. We tested a fully tuned stage 2 FK2 and also a fully stock FK8. The tuned FK2 had stage 2 software, downpipe, exhaust, intake and methanol. At this level of tune the stock tube presents a restriction and so our larger tube allowed the engine to achieve more power all the way through the RPM range. We also tested a fully stock FK8 and although the OEM tube doesn't present a restriction at this power level, the results show that the turbo still benefits from the larger tube since it is able to spool up faster and achieve peak boost earlier hence the gains under 4k rpm. The results show that the higher the demand from the turbo, the more benefit there is in using our carbon turbo inlet tube. Tests were done on the same day back to back with the hood closed and ambient temperatures were monitored for consistency. Several runs were carried out for each configuration to get a repeatable result.

The Eventuri FK2 Carbon Turbo Tube consists of a number of components engineered to perform a specific purpose and fabricated to the highest of standards. Our design brief consisted of 3 main objectives: 1) Increased flow rate. 2) Low intake temperatures. 3) Smooth airflow. The first objective was met by utilising all of the limited space available in the C63S engine bay resulting in a 39% higher flow rate over the stock system. The second objective was met by designing a fully sealed system. The C63S engine bay reaches high temperatures with heat sources like the turbos in close proximity to the intake so it is crucial that the intake remains sealed. The final objective was met by designing an organically shaped system with custom rounded panel filters to ensure the airflow path contained no sharp corners and therefore allowed for the flow to remain laminar. With smooth transitions from the filters to the turbo inlets, our intake minimises the formation of turbulence and therefore the turbos are able to operate more efficiently.

With all 3 objectives met, our W205 C63S intake system delivers on all fronts and allows for the turbos to generate boost more efficiently. This results in an improved throttle response and genuine power gains which increase with higher states of tune. Since there are various turbo upgrades available for the C63S we have also catered a specific solution for larger turbos. Our C63S intake is available in 2 configurations: 61mm ID outlets to match the stock and hybrid turbos and 3″ ID outlets to match larger aftermarket turbos.

Performance Gain : Stage 2 C63S : 22-30hp, 20-24ft-lb

Performance Gain : Stock C63S : 10-12hp, 12-15ft-lb

Dyno tests were carried out on both a fully stock C63S and a stage 2 C63S which had downpipes and a remap. Below is the dyno graph for the stage 2 car which had the same tune on all runs and only the airbox was changed. Importantly the hood was closed for all runs to simulate road conditions. Dyno testing with the hood open - especially with open cone style intakes does not give a reliable indication of how the intakes are affecting power. On the road the hood is closed and so all the heat from the turbos is trapped in the engine bay. On the C63S this is intense heat which is why a sealed system is so crucial. Dyno testing an open cone system with the hood open will yield gains but once on the road the heat soak will cause a significant detriment to the power with the open cones sucking in the hot air. With higher air temperature being less dense, the turbos will not make as much boost resulting in lower power. Furthermore, once the car is accelerating and the open cone intakes have pulled through the standing hot air present, they will continue to pull in the heat generated by the engine and turbos as they spool. With the engine under load and accelerating, turbos produce a lot of heat which can even be seen with the hot sides glowing red.

Here it can be seen with our fully sealed system that the power increases linearly after 4800rpm where the airflow demand increases and the stock airboxes become a restriction. These performance gains were measured after only changing the stock airbox for the Eventuri intake - all other modifications were present for both the stock airbox and the Eventuri intake.

The gains measured on the dyno translates on the road to increased part throttle and full throttle response with the car pulling much more eagerly to the redline. The testing was done on the same day back-to-back and temperatures were monitored to ensure consistency. The car was tested firstly with the stock intake - hood closed. We then left the car on the dyno and installed the Eventuri. The car was then run again - hood closed. As can be seen, after 5000rpm as the flow demand from the engine increases the stock airbox becomes a restriction and gains of 31HP and 39Nm were achieved with the Eventuri intake.

Flow Bench Test Results

We conducted some flow rate tests using a Superflow SF-1020 to measure the maximum flow rate possible at a pressure drop of 28” H2O. Tests were done on the same day in controlled conditions using the same test jig for each system. We tested our sealed intake with our custom filter, the stock airbox with stock filter and an open cone tubular type intake with the intake tube at the same diameter as the stock turbo inlet. Both the left and right side airboxes were tested.

This shows just how restrictive the stock airbox is, which we have managed to improve by up to 41% in maximum possible flow rate. Interestingly the open cone intake, although flowed more than stock, did not flow more than our sealed system. This is because the diameter of the intake tube remains constant all the way from the outlet of the turbo to the cone. So whereas our system dramatically opens in internal volume from outlet to the filter, the open cone system remains at the same smaller cross sectional area. Furthermore it draws air from a duct, which despite extending over the entire grill is in fact only open on one side and this opening is also facing the engine so the airbox draws in warm engine bay heat. In addition, when the bonnet is closed, the only direct path for cold air is from the small slots in the top of the grill (for the Golf 7 variants).

The following dyno graphs show the before and after results on a Golf 7 R (same engine as the Audi 8V S3) which already had a remap. Taking cues from our RS3 intake, we have maximised usage of the available space to create an intake which can cater for all power levels from stock to high power builds with hybrid or full frame turbos. This intake system has been developed to offer the highest possible flow rate whilst maintaining the lowest intake temperatures possible. Each component has been designed to provide the turbo with a smooth and free flowing path. The restrictive stock 73mm diameter inlet tube is replaced with a larger 94mm diameter tube intake tube. The filter itself has an outer diameter of 192mm or 7.5″ with a filtration surface area of over 110,000mm^2. The patented Venturi housing has been designed to provide the maximum internal volume possible for the Golf engine bay space available and provides laminar flow to the turbo tube. Finally the duct seals the filter opening to the front slam panel but is not restricted by just the stock entry feed. We have lifted the front of the duct to now provide an extra opening behind the hood which is equivalent to an extra 7″ diameter hole for the intake to draw from. The resulting system can significantly outflow the stock airbox while keeping intake temperatures at a minimum with the sealed design.

The Eventuri Difference

The 2.0 TFSi Generation 4 Eventuri system uses our Patented Carbon fiber Housings which provide an aerodynamically efficient airflow path from the filter to the turbo tubing. They tested a MK8 Golf R in stock form and also with a Tuning Box. Tests were done on the same day back to back with the stock airbox tested first and then the Eventuri fitted. No other changes were made to the car. The first graph shows the results using a stock map. As can be seen, there is a measurable gain throughout the RPM range of up to 12hp. This gain even on a stock car is noticeable on the road with better throttle response and quicker acceleration. The second graph shows results when using a tuning box which increases the flow demand from the intake system. The tuning box was used for both the stock airbox and the Eventuri intake without any changes between the tests. With a higher flow demand, the stock airbox presents a higher restriction to the turbo as can be seen by the significant gain achieved with the Eventuri fitted. We now have higher gains across the RPM range of up to 20hp and 30Nm, which is even more noticeable on the road. We have carried out intensive R&D to develop an intake which not only improves on the stock M3/M4 but also is future proof in its capacity to cater for high powered builds well in excess of 1000hp. Our system is a complete redesign from the airboxes to the turbo inlets with the aim of reducing pressure loss while increasing the flow rate and keeping inlet temperatures low. We have maximised the usage of the available space to employ 2 custom made filters with a 40% larger filtration area than stock. These are used in our Patented Venturi housings to smoothly funnel the air to the turbo inlets. The inlets themselves are up to 160% larger in cross sectional area than stock and are designed with an advanced dimpled inner surface to reduce frictional losses between the flow and the wall boundary. By allowing a “cushion” of air at the wall surface, airflow is able to move through the inlets at higher flow rates with reduced pressure loss. This allows the turbos to draw air with less resistance and therefore reduce the wastegate duty cycle resulting in higher overall performance.

The Eventuri Difference

The G8X M3/M4 Eventuri system uses our Patented Carbon Fiber Housings with our Gen 2 bespoke filters, which provide an aerodynamically efficient airflow path from the filter to the turbos. In theory, small dimples can increase the flow rate by reducing the frictional pressure losses through a tube. Applying such an intricate was only possible due to the advanced manufacturing technique we employed to make the inlets, where traditional methods would not have given the accuracy required. The dimples create an "air cushion" affect over the surface of the inlet which then allows the main body of air to "slip" with less friction through the body into the turbo. This results in a more even velocity profile in a dimpled tube with the net affect being a higher velocity for the same boundary conditions. Here are the CFD simulations showing the re-circulations in the dimples and the higher velocity in the dimpled tube. It was developed to achieve two objectives – 1) Maintain low inlet temperatures. 2) De-restrict the turbo inlet path. The first objective was met by enclosing the filter inside a carbon airbox and using the stock seal against the hood to block out the heat soak from the engine. Since the intake sits directly behind the radiator it is crucial that the filter is not exposed which would result in a loss of power through high IAT. The second objective was met by removing the flexible tubing and optimising the inlet path with a Venturi stack connected directly to the filter. Furthermore, we added a second inlet to the airbox with a scoop pulling in air from the inner wing area. This almost doubles the total cross-sectional area from which the turbo can draw as compared with the single entry on the stock system. Our carbon airbox enclosure has been designed to maximize the use of the available volume and block all sources of heat. The resulting performance gains and aesthetics are industry-leading for the FK8 Type R.

The standard airbox draws in air from a single entry duct behind the front bumper. The size of this inlet is very small at approximately 35cm^2. The demand from the turbo results in this opening becoming a restriction. However, simply opening the filter inside the engine bay is detrimental since the filter position is directly behind the radiator and once the engine warms up - the filter will become quickly saturated with heat. Our intake system solves this issue by keeping the filter enclosed inside an airbox and adding a secondary feed that opens the inlet area by another 28cm^2. This coupled with our Venturi Filter stack for smooth flow results in an immediate gain across the entire RPM range of 14-20hp. The dyno graph below shows the comparison between the stock airbox and the Eventuri intake system on a standard car with a standard map and exhaust. Dyno runs were done back to back on the same day and with the hood closed.

We then carried out road testing using a Vbox unit to record the acceleration from 60-130mph (also 100-200Km/h). Testing was conducted on the same stretch of road - again on the same day to keep variables minimum. Results show that with just the intake added, the acceleration times from 60-130mph and also 100-200Km/h was reduced by approximately 1.2 seconds which is a significant change at such speeds.

Acceleration results summary:

60-130mph with Stock intake = 15.45 seconds

60-130mph with Eventuri intake = 14.27 seconds

100-200Km/h with Stock intake = 13.04 seconds

100-200Km/h with Eventuri intake =12.17 seconds

COMPATIBLE VEHICLES

Honda Civic Type R | FK8 2.0T K20C1 | 2017+

Components

Each component is engineered for a purpose and to a very high standard.
